You need to focus on 3 steps, When you want to write an email in German.

Step 1 : Anrede (Salutation)

The meaning of SALUTATION is an expression of greeting, goodwill, or courtesy by word, gesture, or ceremony.

You start your Email, with following Steps mentioned in this table. These are different for formell and informell emails.

For two Persons

No capital letter
For Two Persons

If you do not know male or female, than you can write as follows:

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Step 2 : Haupteil (Body of a text)

Imporant is Personal pronouns and conjunctions.

Sie + 3. Person Plurals (Formell)

du/ihr + 2. Person Plurals (Informell)

Email is formell, than use ” Sie ” to indicate the person.

If Email is informell, than use ” du/ihr ” to indicate the person.

Step 3: Gruß (Closing/Regards)

The endings are also different for both formell and informell emails. As mentioned in the following table.

For formell emails, we write full name. While for informell emails we need to write only first name.
