Plurals relevant ”at home”
As well as a different article, the plural form of a word usually takes a different ending. There are some patterns, but you will mostly have to memorise which endings go with which words.
Die Schwestern lesen ein Buch. – The sisters are reading a book.
Tennis spielen Die Männer. – The men are playing tennis.
Die Flure sind sehr schmal. – The hallways are very narrow.
Bis 20 Uhr haben Die Supermärkte geöffnet. – The supermarkets are open until 8 p.m.
Die Straßen sind eng. – The streets are narrow.
In meiner Straße stehen fünf Häuser. – There are five houses on my street.
Die Lehrerinnen trinken Kaffee. – The teachers are drinking coffee.
Die Lehrer kommen aus Spanien.The teachers are from Spain.
Der Mann hat zwei Autos. – The man has two cars.
Die Frauen sind jung. – The women are young.

Das Brot dieser Bäckerei ist sehr gut. – The bread at that baker’s is very good.
Wo ist das Öl? – Where’s the oil?
Ich muss Reis kaufen. – I need to buy some rice.
Ich esse manchmal Nudeln zum Abendessen. – I eat pasta for dinner sometimes.
Mari trinkt ihren Kaffee mit einem Löffel Zucker. Mari takes her coffee with a spoonful of sugar.
Mein Vater benutzt beim Kochen zu viel Salz. – My father uses too much salt when cooking.
Grocery Shopping for ”at home”
Wann öffnet der Supermarkt? – When does the supermarket open?
Sonntags sind die Geschäfte geschlossen. – The shops are closed on Sundays.
Die Geschäfte sind sonntags nicht offen, sondern geschlossen. – The shops are not open on Sundays, they are closed.
Meine Oma kauft frisches Gemüse auf dem Markt. – My grandma buys fresh vegetables at the market.
Wie viel kostet das? – How much does that cost?
Der beste Obst- und Gemüseladen ist neben der Post. – The best greengrocer’s is next to the post office.
Ich möchte Rindfleisch in der Fleischerei kaufen. – I want to buy some beef at the butcher’s.
Freitags kaufen wir frischen Fisch im Fischgeschäft. – On Fridays, we buy fresh fish at the fishmonger’s.
Die Bäckerei an der Ecke hat die besten Brötchen. – The bakery at the corner sells the best bread rolls.
Kann ich etwas Wasser haben? – Can I have some water?
How much we need?
We are now going to learn ways of expressing quantities! Pay attention to some of the vocabulary you’ve already learned.
Ich habe viele Schuhe. – I have a lot of shoes.
Möchtest du ein wenig Milch? – Do you want a little milk?
Ich habe viele Familienmitglieder. – I have many family members.
Ich brauche ein bisschen Zucker. – I need a little bit of sugar.
Alles muss aus der Wohnung raus! – Everything has to come out of the apartment!
An den Nudeln fehlt etwas Salz. – The pasta needs some salt.
Ich muss nichts einkaufen. – I don’t need anything from the shop.
Wir haben etwas Butter aber genug Mehl. – We have some butter, but we have enough flour.
Das ist genug Kaffee. – That’s enough coffee.
Important Note
Some of the words we’ve just learned can only be used with certain nouns: it always depends on whether we can count a noun (e.g. eggs or cookies) or not (e.g. juice or sugar). Here are the basic rules.
We only use these words with nouns we cannot count:
”etwas” & ” ein bisschen”
We can use these words with all nouns:
”viel” & ”wenig” & ”genug”
These words replace the noun, so we use them on their own:
”alles” & ”nichts”
At Restaurant
Mir gefällt das kleine Restaurant an der Ecke. – I like the little restaurant on the corner.
Könnten Sie uns die Speisekarte bringen? – Could you bring bring us the menu?
Wir möchten bitte bestellen. – We would like to order, please.
Möchtest du Nachtisch bestellen? – Do you want to order dessert?
When ordering food or drink in German, we use the phrase “Ich nehme…” (literally “I’m taking”), followed by our choice of food or drink. This phrase is always followed by the accusative case.
Look at the examples below where the direct objects are in bold.
Ich nehme den Fisch als Hauptspeise. (I’ll have the fish as the main course.)
Ich nehme ein Glas Wein. (I’ll have a glass of wine.)
Die Rechnung, bitte. – The bill, please.
Wir möchten bitte einen Tisch am Fenster haben. – We’d like to have a table by the window, please.
Am Samstag essen wir im Restaurant. – We’ll eat at the restaurant on Saturday.
Wir möchten bitte bestellen. – We would like to order, please.
Lass uns Getränke bestellen. – Let’s order drinks.
Ich koche morgen, heute gehen wir ins Restaurant. – I’ll cook tomorrow. Today we’ll go to the restaurant.
Ich möchte Pizza essen. (I would like to eat pizza.)
