Klockan – the clock

Swedish does not use a preposition in time phrases that correspond to the English ‘at one o’clock’, etc:

Vi börjar jobba klockan åtta. (We start work at eight o’clock.)

‘Half past’ an hour in English is always expressed as ‘half (to)’ the following hour in Swedish:

halv tolv: half past eleven
halv ett: half past twelve

Note that Swedes have a special way of expressing time in the period between twenty one minutes past the hour and twenty-one minutes to the hour.

Hur mycket är klockan? (What time is it?)

Note that Swedish uses klockan är (‘the time is’) or hon är (literally: ‘she is’) to render ‘it is’ + clock time expression:

Klockan/hon är ett. (The time is/it is one o’clock.)

Klockan är en minut över ett. (The time is one minute past one.)

Klockan är fem (minuter) i tre. (The time is five (minutes) to three.)

Klockan är (en) kvart över fem. (The time is (a) quarter past five.)

Klockan är halv sex. (It’s half past five.)

While, You need to note also:

midnatt: midnight

fm = förmiddag : a.m. = morning

em = eftermiddag : p.m. = afternoon

Hur dags: At what time

There is another way to ask time in public places:

Hur dags går tåget? (At what time does the train go?)

Det går klockan tio. (It leaves at ten o’clock.)

Hur dags ska han komma? (At what time is he coming?)

Han ska komma klockan åtta. (He’s coming at eight o’clock.)

Hur dags reser han? (At what time is he leaving?)

Han reser klockan elva. (He leaves at eleven o’clock.)

Hur dags är hon ledig? (At what time will she be free?)

Hon är ledig klockan fyra. (She is free at four o’clock.)

Hur dags kan de möta båten? (At what time can they meet the boat?)

De kan möta båten klockan halv tre. (They can meet the boat at half past three.)

Hur dags ska vi skaffa en taxi? (At what time shall we get a taxi?)

Vi ska skaffa en taxi klockan halv tio. (We’ll get a taxi at half past ten.)

Hur dags väntar han oss? (At what time is he expecting us?)

Han väntar oss klockan kvart i sex. (He’s waiting for us at a quarter to six.)

Hur dags kommer han? (At what time is he coming?)

Han kommer klockan fem. (He comes at five o’clock.)

Hur dags tar han flyget? (At what time will he get his flight?)

Han tar flyget klockan kvart över sex. (He takes the flight at a quarter past six.)

The time of day

To specify the time using the 12-hour clock, you can explicitly name the time of day.

• Fem på morgonen : Five in the morning
• Elva på förmiddagen : Eleven in the morning 
• Fyra på eftermiddagen : Four in the afternoon
• Åtta på kvällen : Eight in the evening
• Tolv på natten  : Twelve at night
