Learn German Level 1: Numbers Lesson 31. There are tips to memorize 1 to 19 numbers in German! While, there are also basic counting tips from 20 to 100 in German. Numbers from 101 to onward have been mentioned. While, there is an exercise to practice numbers at the end of this lesson.

Counting 1 – 19

Numbers are very important in any Language. So, here are numbers from 1 to 10.

eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Mehr Zahlen ( more numbers ) : Here we’ll learn the numbers 11-19. Drei – zwei – eins – los! ? (3 – 2 – 1 – go!)

The two numbers that do not follow the pattern “number + zehn” are as follows:

elf : 11 , zwölf : 12

Here’s a tip!

To say 13, 14 and 15, we add the words for either 3 (drei), 4 (vier) or 5 (fünf) on to the word for 10 (zehn).

3 (drei) + 10 (zehn) = 13 (dreizehn)
4 (vier) + 10 (zehn) = 14 (vierzehn)
5 (fünf) + 10 (zehn) = 15 (fünfzehn)

Here’s a tip!

16 and 17 contain a shortened version of the words for 6 (sechs) and 7 (sieben).

6 (sechs) + 10 (zehn) = 16 (sechzehn)
7 (sieben) + 10 (zehn) = 17 (siebzehn)

18 and 19 follow the same pattern as 13, 14 and 15.

3 (drei)+ 10 (zehn)= 13 (dreizehn)
4 (vier)+ 10 (zehn)= 14 (vierzehn)
5 (fünf)+ 10 (zehn)= 15 (fünfzehn)
8 (acht)+ 10 (zehn)= 18 (achtzehn)
9 (neun)+ 10 (zehn)= 19 (neunzehn)

Counting 20 to 100

You have to add ’’ Zig’’ at end for Numbers from 20 to 90! While, Zig is pronounced as Zeesh!

20 = zwanzig
30 = dreißig
40= vierzig
50= fünfzig
60= sechzig
70=siebzig
80=achtzig
90= neunzig
100= hundert

While, In German number like 21, 22, 23, 32, 43, 54 start with last number and works backwards!

21= einundzwanzig; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + und(and) + zwanzig(twenty)
22= zweiundzwanzig; Notice a Pattern: zwei(two) + und(and) + zwanzig(twenty)
23= dreiundzwanzig; Notice a Pattern: drei(three) + und(and) + zwanzig (twenty)

The same pattern would be for 30, 40, 50…….. series as like 21 to 29, as you can find below:

32=zweiunddreißig; Notice a Pattern: zwei(two) + und(and) + dreißig(thirty)
43= dreiundvierzig; Notice a Pattern: drei(three) + und(and) + vierzig(forty)
54= vierundfünfzig; Notice a Pattern: vier(four) + und(and) + fünfzig (fifty)

Numbers 101 and upwards

101= einhunderteins; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + eins(one)
102= einhundertzwei; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + zwei(two)
103= einhundertdrei; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + drei(three)
110= einhundertzehn; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + zehn(ten)
111= einhundertelf; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + elf(eleven)
120= einhundertzwanzig; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + zwanzig(twenty)
130= einhundertdreißig; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + dreißig(thirty)
140= einhundertvierzig; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + vierzig(fourty)
150= einhundertfünfzig; Notice a Pattern: ein(one) + hundert(hundred) + fünfzig(fifty)
