Learn German A1: What day is today Lesson 47. The German Language introduced in this free course by ask-scholars.com is centered around everyday situations. So, If you are an adult with no previous knowledge of German and studying your own, than this course is for you.
In Germany, Sundays are almost treated like holidays. While restaurants and cafés are open, shops and supermarkets are closed.
Der Tag
Die Woche hat sieben Tage. – A week has seven days.
All days of the week are masculine nouns, so their article is always “der”.
To say that something is happening on a certain day, we use the word “am” (on). However, we can also leave it out, as you can see in the examples below.
Am Montag spiele ich Fußball. (I am playing football on Monday.)
Gehen wir Donnerstag ins Museum? (Are we going to the museum on Thursday?)
Am Donnerstag gehen wir Schwimmen. (We go swimming on thursday.)
Weekdays as Adverbs
We can add an “s” to the end of a weekday and use it like an adverb to express that something happens on the same day every week. Remember: we only write nouns in the upper case; adverbs are written in lower case!
Ich gehe am Donnerstag Schwimmen. (I’m going swimming on Thursday.)
Ich gehe donnerstags Schwimmen. (I go swimming on Thursdays.)
Ich spiele montags Fußball. – This sentence expresses a regular activity.
