The University of Bergen (UiB) is highly ranked in Europe by QS World University Rankings. It is a public institution and therefore does not charge tuition fees. This applies both to Norwegian and International Students. The only fee to be paid at the University of Bergen is semester fee to the Student Welfare Organisation (Sammen).

Sammen is a non-profit organization and the allocation of profits within the organization finances other parts of Sammen’s welfare services. Students automatically become members of Sammen when they pay the semester fee and complete the semester registration, and get access to a range of welfare services, such as reasonably priced housing, sports, cafeterias, health and child care services, career and counselling services.

What is the Semester Fee?

The semester fee is NOK 590. This includes a voluntary payment to the Norwegian Students’ and Academics’ International Assistance Fund (SAIH) who works to promote education in Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, If you for some reason do not wish to do so, you can remove the tick in the payment service and pay NOK 550.

Students on exchange programmes do not have to pay the semester fee.

You may apply for a refund if you paid the semester fee but will not be studying at UiB this semester.

Faculties at University of Bergen

The University of Bergen is an internationally recognised research university. UIB offers Academic diversity and a high-quality teaching environment.

Master Programmes have duration of two years and offered in following Faculties.

UiB offers a diversity of master’s programmes taught in English for international students. UiB is publicly funded and don’t charge tuition fees. You must still make a plan and document how will you pay living cost while you study in Bergen.

What is Application Process?

Undergraduate study programmes are not offered in English at The University of Bergen (UiB). Applicants with education from outside of Norway must document Norwegian language proficiency in the application process.

You can choose to apply for various master’s degrees of a two-year duration. The application procedure and application deadline will vary depending on which applicant type you are.

Check the country list to ensure that you meet the requirement of an approved bachelor’s degree, as well as the English language requirement and any specific documentational requirements.

Check that your education is recognized and accredited by international standards. UiB uses the database Anabin to check this requirement.

Check that you meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements.

Ensure that you have the correct documentation to prove sufficient funding.

Check if the master’s programme you apply for has any additional requirements.

Motivation letter would play an important role to secure admission and length of it should be maximum 450 words. Describe your personal motivation for applying to the programme you are applying for.

Other documents are as follows

  • Secondary school certificate / High school diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate/diploma (all pages)
  • Transcript of records including a description of the grading scale used
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • Proof of sufficient funding
  • Copy of your passport or photo ID
  • CV including your educational background
  • Course descriptions for all relevant courses, including academic content and syllabus/reading list
  • Any additional documentation requirements

Students who cannot present approved documentation may lose their right to study at UiB. So, make sure, all documents are attested before you apply.

Unfortunately UiB does not offer conditional offers of admission for applicants from non-EU countries, due to regulations by the immigration authorities. This means that University will only process your application if all the required documents are uploaded in your application by the relevant documentation deadline.

Do you need IELTS?

You can be exempt from IELTS if you have completed a programme in specific countries. Make sure you check the specific details about the country where you have studied in the list of exemptions.
